Licensing Renewal

Congratulations on your receiving/renewing your license and appointment this conference year. Below you will find the expectations and guidelines for renewing your license for the upcoming appointment year.

Due to a change in policy from the Board of Ordained Ministry, there are two tracks to license renewal for local pastors:

  1. The Standard Process
  2. A Modified Process for local pastors who
    • have served consecutively for five years,
    • have completed Course of Study
    • are actively participating in a clergy covenant group

Pastors who meet the criteria for the Modified Process may be eligible to forego the annual interview with the District Committee on Ordained Ministry (dCOM)

Please select the application below that corresponds to the district in which you are serving and follow the prompts.

The Links for forms for Renewal forms are here:

Coastal Virginia – due December 31
The Modified Process is not available in the Coastal Virginia District until the 2025-2026 appointment cycle. Please use the Standard process for 2024-2025.
Living Waters – due by September 6
Mission Rivers – due December 15
Mountain View – due December 31
The Modified Process is not available in the Mountain View District until the 2025-2026 appointment cycle. Please use the Standard process for 2024-2025.
Northern Virginia – due by December 1
Shenandoah River – due December 31
Three Notch’d – due December 31
Valley Ridge – due December 31

*Deadline for Submission

Standard Process:
Two weeks prior to your interview with the dCOM

Please note: Licensed Local Pastors who were licensed for the first time at the most recent annual conference, do not need to upload an evaluation until the following year for your second year license renewal, and for every year following.

Modified Process:
December 30, unless otherwise noted by district

Management of the License

The License serves to document the credentials of a local pastor in the United Methodist Church. In order to maintain these credentials, a licensed local pastor must:

  • Adhere to the renewal process by following either the Standard or the Modified process
  • Obtain the signature of the District Superintendent on the back of the license annually
  • Have access to the license at all times
