The Dromgoole House (Canaan) Nomination to State and Federal Historic Registers

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR) administers two programs designed to recognize Virginia’s historic resources and to encourage their continued preservation: the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.   To learn more about these Historic Register programs and about the historical sites in Virginia that have already been placed on these registers go  to www.dhr.virginia.gov.   VDHR also invites you to contact them if you have questions about what else they have on file about the sites listed on these registers.

In 2017, two Old Brunswick Circuit Foundation board members, Carol Corker and Lisa Jordan, worked together to submit to VDHR the completed  Preliminary Information form  required to have the Dromgoole House listed  on these two historic registers. Based on the historical research done by Carol Corker, this form detailed the historical and architectural significance of this –the home of Rev. Edward Dromgoole, Sr. As a result of their submission, the Dromgoole house was rated eligible for nomination to the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in that year.

In 2021 Carol Corker with the assistance of the VDHR, submitted the final application form required in this nomination process. This was done in anticipation of the preservation work that was scheduled to be done on the Dromgoole House as a result of a grant awarded to the Old Brunswick Circuit Foundation financed by the Emergency Supplemental funding from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund (ESHPF).  Click HERE to see the submitted nomination form.

On August 9, 2021 the National Park Service approved the Dromgoole house for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
