Charles Herbert Harless, affectionately known as “The Rev,” age 95, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on July 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Jasper “J.D.” Dennis Harless and Gernie (Prince) Harless. Charles dedicated his life to spiritual service, earning his degree from Duke University and serving as a Clergyman for the United Methodist Annual Conference. Throughout his distinguished career, he pastored various UMC churches across Virginia until his retirement in 1993. At the time of his passing, he held the honored title of Pastor Emeritus at Kernstown United Methodist Church.
Charles married the love of his life, Nelda Leora (McGinnis) Harless, on October 22, 1950, in Morgantown. Together, they shared over 75 years of marriage and built a legacy of faith and family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nelda; his daughter, Dawna Wilson; and his sons, John Harless (Karen) and Michael Harless (Mary). He also leaves behind a sister, Nena Perilli (Gene); six grandchildren, Heather, Jesse, Cory, Andrew, Mary, and Chris; and great-grandchildren, Silas, Victor, Linus, Aiden, Kaylee, Gage, Kaiden and Jacob.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Chuck” Harless; his sisters, Elva, Geraldine, Lorraine, and Velma; and his brothers, Julian, and Eugene “Bud.”
A visitation [was] held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 6pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A funeral service [was] conducted on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 11am at Kernstown United Methodist Church. Interment [followed] the service at Shenandoah Memorial Park.
