Lay Servant Training

The Shenandoah River District Lay Servant Ministries Committee has scheduled a training day for 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, March 16 at Strasburg United Methodist Church.
Three classes will be offered:
Basic Course, which is for anyone who is interested in either becoming a Certified Lay Servant or Certified Lay Speaker or who simply wants to deepen their knowledge of the United Methodist Church and find their service niche. It will be taught by Rev. Blair O’Quinn, the newly appointed District Director of Connectional Ministries. Students will be expected to purchase and read the book prior to the class. Leading Worship: This course is one of the Advanced Courses required for certification as a lay servant or lay speaker. The class will count towards re-certification, as well. It also would be appropriate for anyone in church leadership who occasionally helps plan or lead worship services. The class will be taught by Joe Amend, former director of lay servant ministries in the Harrisonburg District. United Methodist History (Heritage): This course is one of the Advanced Courses required for certification as a lay servant or lay speaker. The class will count towards re-certification, as well. This class also is for you if you want to know more about how the United Methodist Church and its beliefs have been shaped over time. The course will be taught by the Rev. Larry Davies, a retired Virginia UMC elder and former District Superintendent. Reverend Davies also is a well-known blogger and author. Aside from purchasing the book, there will be no charge for these classes. Coffee and a light lunch will be provided. We will ask you to register online for the classes so that we can have an accurate count. The online registration form will be available in early February.
