What is “J term”? It stands for the January term at schools during which students are given an opportunity to focus on one subject in between semesters. Here at Shady Grove, we are offering a “J term” to allow us to focus on Understanding the Bible.
For three Mondays in January (15th, 22nd, and 29th), we will be gathering in the fellowship hall from 6:15-7:15 p.m. to hear from three different speakers. In your New Year’s resolution, how about focusing on growing your faith with the help of “J term”? So often we hear people saying they have a hard time reading the Bible because they don’t understand it. Right here during “J term”, you can address that.
January 15th – What’s So Important About the Old Testament?
Speaker: Dr. Mark E. Biddle, Dean of the Faculty of Sophia Theological Seminary in Dinwiddie, VA
Dr. Biddle has been on the faculty of Carson Newman University, Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond as Professor of Old Testament, as well as, an adjunct professor at the Polish Baptist Theological Seminary in Warsaw-Radosc, and, currently, Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond.
January 22nd – What Do the Gospels Say About Jesus?
Speaker: Dr. Donald Polaski, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Randolph-Macon College,
Dr. Polaski has been on the faculty of William and Mary, the University of Virginia, the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, and Furman University. He is the author of several books and countless articles and reviews.
January 29th – What Do the Different Jewish Holidays in the Bible Mean?
Speaker: Rabbi Patrick Beaulier, Director of Innovation for Pluralistic Rabbinical Seminary
Rabbi Patrick is the rabbi for a pop-up Jewish community called Kehillah, an independent alternative to synagogue in Richmond. He is a Prepare-Enrich certified premarital and relationship coach, Grief Support Specialist, as well as a Psychological First Aid provider.
Let “J term” be a time you focus on Jehovah as portrayed in the Old Testament, Jesus in the Gospels, and Jewish Holidays then and now. It is a great way to Jump start your faith in the New Year.
