Greetings in the name of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ!

The Virginia Conference Leadership Discovery and Development Team (CLDDT – the nominations committee) seeks to provide this Annual Conference nominations-related update. The CLDDT has reviewed The 2016 United Methodist Book of Discipline (BOD) and reviewed the Virginia Conference Standing Rules to gain clarity regarding navigating changes on our Boards/Agencies/Committees.

As a number of transitions would have taken effect following the September 19 Annual Conference session, we share the following guidance as a result of that invalidated session:

  1. Those in a class year with a mandatory end of term (those who have served 8 years or more; 4 years in the case of the Common Table for Church Vitality; 9 years for The UM Foundation and the Bishops’ Foundation) shall transition off their Boards/Agencies immediately effectively this past June 30, 2020. More specifically; your term is not renewable.
  2. Those scheduled to rotate off a Board/Agency/Committee due to class year rotation as opposed to a mandatory BOD rule continue to serve until an Annual Conference takes place;
  3. Newly nominated persons may participate on said Boards/Agencies with voice but without vote until an Annual Conference election takes place.

In review of our United Methodist laws and in consultation with the Virginia Conference Standing Rules, we have confirmed that the transitions described above are within our Rules.  Those in category a) transition off their Board/Agency.  Those in category b) remain in service until an Annual Conference takes place.  Those in category c) serve with voice until an Annual Conference takes place and shift to voice and vote immediately following the Annual Conference session.

It is with deep appreciation that we thank each of you. We are grateful for those who have given the sacrificial gifts of time and talent, and grateful for those who have accepted a nomination to serve the Conference.
