Camp Rainbow Connection (CRC) is a ministry that offers a week-long respite camp for adults with intellectual disabilities. CRC has a history of 40 years of connection with the VAUMC. CRC is now embarking on a new journey to become a separate 501(c)(3) organization by the end of 2024.

CRC has officially launched its new webpage and can be found here. Updated contact information for CRC is: [email protected]

Learn more about the change in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below.

Q1. What is really changing with CRC ?

CRC will become its own 501(c)(3) by the end of the 2024 calendar year. The organization will have its own Board of Directors. CRC will then officially enter into an agreement with the VAUMC to become a Relationship Partner. Relationship Partners are organizations that began as ministries within the conference but now operate independently and continue to be supported by local UMCs.

Q2. How did this come about?

One piece of the VAUMC Missional and Community Engagement Office’s responsibilities has involved overseeing the work of CRC.

On July 30th, 2024, Stacy Roberts, Coordinator for CRC, and Rev. Amanda Miller Garber, Director of Missional and Community Engagement for the VAUMC, engaged in their regular bimonthly supervisory meeting. In the meeting, they collaboratively explored several things, including a new vision related to the structure and organization of CRC, a vision in which CRC was its own 501(c)(3) overseen by its own Board of Directors.

Q3. How was this decision approved?

Subsequent conversations surrounding the new vision of CRC  included Vicky Butler, CRC’s Board Chair, CRC’s Executive Team, and various VAUMC key leaders.

Butler indicated support for this vision. The CRC Board discussed and voted to approve the suggested proposal outlining the vision on  August 17, 2024.

The proposal was also discussed and approved by the VAUMC Common Table on August 22, 2024. Conference staff are offering administrative guidance and support for CRC staff and Board members as the new 501(c)(3) is formed over the next couple of months.

Q4. How will this change be beneficial for CRC?

As a 501(c)(3) organization and as a VAUMC Relationship Partner, Camp Rainbow Connection will be enabled to access new and varied funding opportunities. The organization will also maintain close relational ties with individuals and local churches within the VAUMC. As a Relationship Partner, CRC will be eligible to apply for Conference grants. The VAUMC celebrates its history with CRC, and we look forward to maintaining a vital relationship with this organization in the future.
