Thelma E. Rice was the surviving spouse of Rev. Ralph E. Rice

Thelma Elizabeth Rice, 86, of Mathews, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Windy Hill Retreat.

Thelma was a strong and spirited woman with a gentle presence and a heart full of love. She had a beautiful love for singing with a voice like a songbird. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she dearly loved her church. Thelma was also an avid gardener and found joy in caring for her garden. She was known for being a tough lady and a true spitfire, while also having a kindness and gentleness that touched those around her.

Thelma is survived by her two sons, Tommy Rice (Fawn) and Paul Rice (Sheri); six grandchildren, Chris, Andy, Jeff, Jason, Lauren (Steven), and Cody (Lindsay) Rice; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Barbara, Carrie, and Irvin Chewning; and her special friend, Kathryn “Ole Cuss” Diggs, who was like a sister to her.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ralph Edward Rice; her parents, Roy and Katherine Chewning; and her siblings, James, Woodrow, Deloris, and Donald Chewning.

Thelma was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her beautiful spirit, strength, and gentle presence will be remembered and cherished.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Monday, September 21, 2026 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, Virginia, where the funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Memorial Park.
