Shirley Hunsicker was the spouse of Rev. Philip N. Hunsicker

Shirley Macfarlan Hunsicker, born on April 18, 1936, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, surrounded by her devoted husband of 68 years, Philip Hunsicker, and their three children, Stephen Hunsicker, Rebecca Lanning, and Maria Dubuc.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Shirley met Philip 70 years ago, and together they made Virginia their home for the rest of their lives. She graduated from Miami High School and continued her education at the University of Miami, Emory & Henry College, and Radford College. Later, Shirley earned a master’s degree in reading from the University of Virginia. She spent most of her career teaching second grade in Virginia public schools, especially at Waddell Elementary School in Lexington.

In 2000, Shirley and Philip retired to their beloved “cottage” in Madison County, the home they built together and enjoyed with family and friends for more than 50 years. In 2018, they moved to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg

Shirley was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren: Emma Lanning, Isaac Lanning, Joseph Dubuc, and Nathan Dubuc. She loved making quilts and over the years made one for each of her children and grandchildren. Shirley also loved animals of all kinds and delighted in taking care of her dogs and observing the wildlife in the woods around her home.

She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Miriam Herin, of Greensboro, North Carolina, who passed away in May, and by her parents, John and Margaret Macfarlan of Miami, Florida.

Shirley will be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, humor, and unwavering love for her family.
