Trinity United Methodist Church Celebrates 250 Years!
Alexandria Fixture Continues Its Saga
With Faith, Fortitude…and Fanfare!
Unified by the theme, “250 Years of Looking Upward and Pushing Forward!,” months of activities will culminate in a special Homecoming Weekend. Activities include:
The weekend kicks off with a special “Hallelujah” Hour at the Hotel Heron. After a fellowship time, the 250th Anniversary Committee invites guests on an evening Trinity history walking tour of Trinity landmarks in Old Town.
“This is My Story, This is My Song!” A worship service 250 years in the making, and open to the public, the worship service will take place in the church sanctuary, 2911 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria. The church will proclaim God’s faithfulness and boldly step into its next 250 years. Service will include special guests and a new, commissioned musical piece with orchestra. After worship, the congregation will blow out candles, and celebrate with cake and punch!
“As we celebrate this milestone, we recognized that we didn’t get here by ourselves. One of the best parts of the year was partnering with our community. This spring, we donated $15,000 to Alexandria City Public School Lunch debt forgiveness and to ALIVE emergency housing assistance. This fall, we participated in a joint worship with Roberts Memorial UMC and Washington Street UMC, our historic siblings. We look forward to continuing to serve in our community!” said Grace Han, Lead Pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church.
The first Methodist Church in Alexandria, Trinity was founded in 1774 by teenager William Duke and a small band of followers. Committed to charity and community service from its beginning, the church has long supported programs for those in need in our backyard and around the globe. Starting in the 18th century, congregants included Black and white persons from all stations of society. Trinity came out strongly against slavery and, more recently, became a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network of the United Methodist Church, honoring and accepting LGBTQ+ people throughout its life and leadership.
Liz Williams, Chair of the 250th Anniversary Committee, said, “It truly has been an awe-inspiring year celebrating our past 250 years of faith, service, and community. We have honored the stories of the generations who built this legacy and acknowledged when we have fallen short. Rooted in history, yet always reaching forward, we as a congregation look forward to embracing the next 250 years with unwavering faith and love.”
