Register for event to learn Wesleyan way of managing finances

VUMPI and the Virginia United Methodist Foundation (VAUMF) are pleased to offer the course Saving Grace: A Guide to Financial Well-Being for Virginia United Methodist clergy and their spouses/accountability partners.
Saving Grace is a Wesleyan-based personal financial education program designed to help individuals create healthy financial habits and align their financial lives with their faith. The clergy-unique aspect of the course consists of three supplements, including specific videos that address:

1) setting up clergy-specific aspects of finances
2) the many aspects of UM Clergy retirement; and
3) being a financial leader for the congregation, including preaching and teaching on money and stewardship.

The seven-session program begins Wednesday, April 19, and runs through May 31. Sessions will be offered via Zoom each Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participants who complete all sessions are eligible for 1.0 CEU.

The only cost for participating clergy is the program’s clergy workbook. (Cokesbury offers the new book for about $30 including tax and shipping. The workbook is also available on Amazon, where you may save with free shipping or used books.)

Course space is limited. Register now to secure your spot. Registration deadline is April 12. Contact John Fuller at VUMPI ([email protected]) or Brad Duty at the Foundation ([email protected]) for more information.

Learn more about update from Blacksburg UMC, partnership with Kyiv UMC

In the fall of 2022, Blacksburg United Methodist Church (BUMC) received a request from its Ukrainian sister church, Spring of Life UMC, for winter gear because about 50% of the electric grid in Ukraine had been destroyed by recent Russian bombing. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, BUMC has collected approximately $40,000, one-half of which was donated to UMCOR, while the other half was held in reserve for post-war rebuilding efforts. But the BUMC Ukraine ministry team realized that the war was not going to end anytime soon. The team made the decision that immediate needs trumped holding back the funds reserved for rebuilding. "After all," said team member Jackie Nutter, "If humanitarian needs are not addressed, there might not be a church to rebuild." The team informed the BUMC congregation of this change and received no pushback. Read more...

Celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday

Native American Ministries Sunday serves to remind United Methodists of the gifts and contributions made by Native Americans to our society. A gap in knowledge exists in The United Methodist Church, in congregations and other United Methodist entities, relative to comprehending concepts of Native American life, cultures, languages, spirit, values, contemporary issues, and such. We affirm the sacredness of American Indian people, their languages, cultures, and gifts to the church and the world. Learn more...
The official date set to celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday is Sunday, April 23, 2023, but churches are encouraged to celebrate on a date that is most convenient for your congregation. A full package of ready to use resources for Native American Ministries Sunday is available for you to explore how we give, why we give and the impact we make through connectional efforts.

Submit nominations for Green Church Award

The Virginia Board of Church and Society are accepting nominations for the 2023 Virginia Annual Conference Green Church Award and Sustaining Green Church Award. Applications should be completed by May 14.

In 2009, the Virginia Annual Conference established the Green Church Initiative and called churches to "green" their ministries. To recognize the continuing work of creation care in the Virginia Annual Conference, the board is asking for nominations to receive the Green Church and Sustaining Green Church Award during the Virginia Annual Conference during June 15-17, 2023 session.

Recipients of these awards strive to affirm the importance of healing and defending God's creation in their mission as local congregations. They are engaged in this ministry in worship, learning and teaching, individual and congregational lifestyle and community, national, and global advocacy/involvement.
