Pre-Conference activities

Angels in T-shirts
It takes a lot of behind the scenes work to make Annual Conference happen and that became even more apparent this year. Bryan Compton, conference IT director; and Nick Ruxton, conference videographer, left the United Methodist Center Tuesday afternoon in a truck loaded with supplies, equipment, and furniture that conference staff had loaded throughout the last five days. Unfortunately the truck only made it as far as the first rest area on 64 West in Goochland when it experienced mechanical difficulties in the sweltering heat. Enter Angels in T-shirts! It took the heavenly-sent volunteers only 30 minutes to transfer the contents of the broken-down truck to a new truck so Compton and Ruxton could be on their way to Roanoke. The volunteers are Drew and Derek Dommisse, Kathy and Tim Ruxton, Jeff Bailey, Mark Tuttle, Chuck Nobel, and Gregg Schull.

♦ Mulligans Against Malaria golf tournament - 12:30 p.m. June 18
A golf tournament to raise money for Imagine No Malaria will be part of pre-Annual Conference activities planned by the Roanoke District. Mulligans Against Malaria will be Thursday, June 18, at Blue Hills Golf Course, 2002 Blue Hills Drive NE, Roanoke (off of 460/Orange Ave). Cost will be $35 per golfer, including greens fees and dinner. Tee time is 12:30 p.m. for a shotgun start. Up to 120 golfers can participate. Pre-registration is required. At this captain's choice tournament, each team is asked to raise funds by getting sponsors from local churches for birdies or eagles or on a per stroke basis. If you are a single golfer, you will be placed on a team. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Prizes will be given for the best score (including a round of golf for four at the Homestead and a week at a condo in Myrtle Beach) and for the team that raises the most for "Imagine No Malaria." ♦ Potato Drop – 7 a.m. Friday, June 19, at Southview UMC
More than 20 tons of potatoes will be dropped at Southview UMC, 3539 Peters Creek Rd., Roanoke, in the pre-dawn hours of Friday, June 19. At 7 a.m., volunteers will be needed to bag and load the donated potatoes so they can be picked up by regional food banks, church pantries, soup kitchens and other local feeding agencies. Co-sponsored by the conference office of Justice and Missional Excellence and the Society of Saint Andrew, a national, nonprofit food salvage hunger-relief program, the potato drop will provide 120,000 to 135,000 servings of food to the region’s poor and hungry. Come get dirty and help bag potatoes for local food banks and still have time to get cleaned up and ready for the start of conference. For more information, contact Sarah Ramey, Society of St. Andrew, at vaglean@endhunger.org or call (540) 362-1767. (To get to Southview UMC, take the south exit off of I-581 onto Peters Creek Rd. The church is ¼ mile on the left of Peters Creek Rd.)
