Conference offices to close for Christmas holidays
Conference offices in the United Methodist Center in Glen Allen will close at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, and remain closed through Wednesday, Dec. 28, in observance of the Christmas holiday. Offices will re-open on Thursday, Dec. 29. Conference offices will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 2, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. 

Bishop Lewis shares Christmas greeting, New Year’s challenge
Bishop Lewis shared Christmas greetings alongside the conference staff to the Virginia Conference. She also shared a New Year’s challenge to the conference. In 2017, she invites both clergy and laity to read the Bible with her from beginning to end. More information about the challenge will be found in the January 2017 issue of the Advocate. More... 

Bishop Lewis to host 2017 Convocation on Prayer 
Bishop Sharma Lewis will host a Bishop’s Convocation on Prayer on April 1, 2017, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue, Henrico, VA  23229.  The Rev. Juanita Rasmus, co-pastor of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Houston, TX, will be the plenary speaker for the convocation. Workshops on a variety of topics will be offered as part of the convocation. More information about registration for the convocation will be available after the first of the year.

Ministries with Young People office needs your input
Paulo Lopes, director of Ministries with Young People, launched a Young People’s Ministry Team initiative in May 2016. This team has been working hard for the last several months to develop a “big picture,” unifying approach to ministries with young people in Virginia (including children, youth, young adults and campus ministries). The process is a complex one with over 1,100 churches and around 100,000 in worship every Sunday to understand context and the current realities of ministries across the conference. To help the team in their endeavors, please fill out this five-minute survey. More...

3 Minute Stir project launches from conference office 
3 Minute Stir, a concept created by Paulo Lopes, conference director of Ministries with Young People, and Nick Ruxton, conference videographer, is a new VAUMC resource developing from Bishop Lewis’ charge to Virginia to “stir up the gifts” at her Welcoming Service in September. Each of these 3-minute videos are a reengagement with Scripture-based and relatable messages to be shared with small groups or youth groups. Currently, you can view the introduction video as well as the first 3 Minute Stir video. Subscribe to the video on YouTube to connect with the latest videos. New videos will be released about once a month. Subtitles are available in Portuguese. Volunteers are needed to transcribe these videos into other languages, if interested contact Paulo Lopes at PauloLopes@vaumc.org. Closed captioning is also available. More... 

Scholarships available for CCT convocation 
Christian Churches Together (CCT), a community of Catholics, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Orthodox African-American and Protestant Christian organizations in the United States, is holding their annual convocation to focus on the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation entitled “Signs of Hope and What Divides Us Today.” Held Jan. 31 2017, through Feb. 3 in Anaheim, Calif, The United Methodist Church takes a delegation of interested members to the convocation and the Council of Bishops is offering one to three scholarships for United Methodist seminary students who have an interest in the unity of the church and the legacy of the Protestant Reformation. To obtain a scholarship application, students should contact the Rev. Dr. Jean Hawxhurst at jhawxhurst@umc-co.org. The deadline for applications is Dec. 27, 2016. More...

The Conference Legislative Committee is hosting a 25th anniversary celebration of United Methodist Day at General Assembly, Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Centenary UMC, 411 E. Grace Street, Richmond, Va. The event will start with registration at 11 a.m., lunch at noon followed by a program at 1 p.m. Pre-registration is necessary and child care will be available. ♦ 25th Annual United Methodist Day at General Assembly - Feb. 2, 2017
The Conference United Methodist Day is Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017. It is an avenue of faithful advocacy that helps participants look beyond mercy ministry and join together with elected officials to make a difference and exercise the Social Principles of the UMC. Early bird registration and payment of $25 per person must be received by Friday, Jan. 15. Final registration will be Friday, Jan. 29 and will cost $35.
