United Methodist Insurance Renewals

Dec. 21, 2018 --From David Dommisse, conference treasurer, DavidDommisse@vaumc.org

I would like to apologize for how UMI has handled this change of business practices. From my perspective, it is appalling and unacceptable that notifications were not sent out allowing local churches to be aware of large rate increases and affording time for review of options. We have been a long time customer of UMI at the conference level and will be looking for an alternative. Our experience has been similar to those that you are experiencing at the local church level.

I now offer an update after speaking to the head of UMI. UMI will no longer be taking the risk of loss from the program and the captive will be ending as current policies mature. I was referred to the FAQ’s on UMI’s website for additional information: http://www.uminsure.org/faqs.

I do not have a perfect solution for this situation, and I worry about churches not having insurance coverage for any period of time.  Therefore, I offer the following alternatives:

The first priority of the church is maintaining coverage without any lapse. In order to do this, you may select one of the two options outlined in your letter from AmVenture;
1. Pay the down payment for the Tier 1 Option with Allianz referenced in your UMI letter.
2. Opt into the Tier 2 Option with another carrier per AmVenture. Please contact AmVenture @ (866)203-0777 for details.
You may also obtain a quote by contacting:
1. Church Mutual – (800)554-2642
2. Brotherhood Mutual through Sanford Insurance Agency – Mike Sanford (804)716-8940
3. A Local Independent Agent

I will continue to monitor the situation and be a resource to you in this process.  I do not recommend that we continue to do business with AmVenture going forward.

Dec. 20, 2018 -- The conference treasurer’s office has recently been made aware of renewal notices being sent from UMI/AM Venture. These notices are showing significant premium increases for local churches. After contacting AM Venture, the treasurer's office has been told that premiums are increasing due to changes in UMI’s underwriting guidelines. An attempt was made to contact UMI leadership Dec. 20 but they were in a board meeting. The treasurer's office has reached out to conference leaders with extensive insurance experience for advice.  "Please know we are working to find out answers as soon as possible and we will send out another update tomorrow," said David Dommisse, conference treasurer.
