A big Thank you from All God’s Children Camp

Wow!  What a fantastic summer for All God’s Children Camp.  This year we sent 87 children to camp at three different sites around Virginia.  Through Harmony (our self-esteem building and conflict resolution class), Bible study and arts and crafts, they were able to hear and talk about how Jesus is FOR them.  They began to understand what it means to be fearfully and wonderfully made by a Creator who wants nothing more but to be in relationship with them.  Through outdoor activities such as rock wall climbing, boating, archery, swimming, low ropes and much more, they began to lean on and trust each other and build each other up.

We are so thankful for the 64 mentors who gave up a week of their summer to volunteer to love on some kids who need it most.  I want to thank each and every one of you for being the hands and feet of Christ for our beautiful children.  You started out as a mentor but you became someone who they laughed with, cried with, confided in; you because someone they could trust.  You became their friend.

To those who donated monetarily and adopted cabins, we were ready to welcome and receive the campers with everything they needed for the week.  Through our churches and individual donations, all the needs and supplies were met for every camper.

Thank you to Camp Chanco on the James, Camp Overlook and Occohannock on the Bay.   We thank you for hosting us this summer and for your wonderful hospitality.  You all welcomed the campers with open arms.  Your staff was amazing in leading all the camp activities, teaching them camp songs and just showing them what camp life is all about.

Thank you to all the staff of All God’s Children Camp:  our weekly on site coordinators, Bible study leaders, arts and crafts leaders, chaplains and our awesome folks from Harmony.  You were amazing.  You allowed the campers to just be children.  Because of you they were able to leave their daily struggles behind for the week and just be children who played gaga ball, sang songs, made crafts, listened to the word of God, was reminded that they are somebody, made s’mores and came up with skits.

Thanks to all of you who prayed for camp: for praying for All God’s Children staff, Camp staff, mentors and our campers.

Lastly, thank you to all the parents and guardians who allowed their children to come to camp.  Thank you for allowing us to love on your children.  I hope they enjoyed camp as much as all of us and I’m looking forward to seeing them again next year.

Without each and everyone of you there would be no camp.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Much love and peace,
Lori Smith
Director, All God's Children Camp

There are many ways you can volunteer for camp and we definitely need all the help we can get.  Below are all the ways you can get involved.  Please contact Lori Smith at lttlelori@gmail.com or by phone, 571-245-9591 if you would like more information.

1. Prayer. Please pray for Camp Overlook, Camp Chanco and Occohannock on the Bay as they receive All God’s Children Camp this summer.  Please pray that we have 90 folks sign up to be mentors for our 3 camps. Pray that those mentors will be the hands and feet of Jesus for our campers.  Also, pray for all staff members of All God’s Children Camp as they prepare for an awesome summer.  Lastly, pray for the campers, that their lives may be transformed in and through Jesus.
2. Sign up to become a mentor.  It will change your life!  There is nothing like spending a week in the outdoors with some awesome kids who just want to be loved on.  The dates are listed below.
3. Get a group together to provide supplies for our campers.  All the supplies that are donated get to go home with the campers.  These include bed sheets, pillows, toiletries, blankets and other goodies.  Please contact Lori for a full list of supplies.
4. Sign up to drive campers to camp.  This is a big need!  Most of our campers are unable to provide their own transportation for various reasons.  So about 90% of them will need a ride to and from camp.
5. Monetary donations.  Thanks to the support of you and our local churches, campers have the opportunity to come to camp at no cost. Without you, this would not be possible.  The cost to send one child to camp is $400.00.  Donations should be made payable to All God’s Children Camp and can be sent to: Virginia United Methodist Conference, P.O. Box 5606, Glen Allen, VA 23058, Attn: Becky Tate.

What is All God’s Children Camp? Children, ages 7 to 12, with an incarcerated mother or father, spend a week at camp, participating in activities such as boating, swimming, hiking, archery, music, crafts, Bible study, and conflict resolution.  Partnering with Virginia United Methodist camps, All God’s Children Camp provides a week of sanctuary for children who face so many challenges in their lives: economic poverty; temporary living conditions; loneliness; low self-esteem; violence; and drugs.
