LECTIO DIVINA (DIVINE READING)
Choose a place of quiet and solitude
Select the passage, (no more than 5-10 verses). Suggestions: use the daily lectionary or a book of the Bible. lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu
Remind yourself that your intention is to be addressed by God through the scripture. Let go of your own agenda.
Ask for guidance and illumination of the Holy Spirit in your reading.
Read the passage slowly, pausing between phrases and sentences. Reading aloud is preferable. Let the words echo and resonate in your mind. Allow meanings to soak in and associations to arise, images to surface. If a word or phrase stands out, turn it over in your mind and heart. If the significance of it fades, move on. If the significance remains, stay with it.
Begin to reflect on it. Ask yourself: Why is this word significant for me? What is it about your life right now that needs to hear this word? How is God catching your attention?
How do you find yourself praying for your own needs? How does this word move you to pray for others?
Finally, release all your thoughts, feelings, and intentions to God.
Take the word, image or phrase with you. Reflect on it throughout your day.
