On September 9th, 2023, Tabernacle UMC (Mission Rivers district) resumed mission travel to connect with our Mexico mission partner. Our Mission partner is located in Mexico about 4 & ½ hours south of Mexico City. The mission partner is called “Give Ye Them To Eat” (GYTTE). Among the many blessings of the team composition was the ecumenical nature of the team members. The Fredericksburg area ecumenical team included Tabernacle & Fredericksburg UMC members, Baptist, and Catholics.
GYTTE was founded in 1977 as a social outreach project of the Methodist Church of Mexico to combat hunger and poverty in the rural sector. The purpose of the “Give Ye Them to Eat” program (GYTTE) is to strengthen the capabilities of marginalized people and communities to meet their basic needs, and to determine and sustain a just and integrated development process. Participatory methods and development tools are used to create conditions in which change can take place from within the communities. GYTTE uses people-centered approaches to development. The Training Center is located 70 miles southwest of the city of Puebla, on a 40-acre hillside a short distance from the village of Tlancualpican
In addition to six providing comprehensive teaching programs, the GYTTE staff hosted 400 virtual mission experiences through the most challenging days of the Covid crisis. Today, the staff continue virtual and in person courses and classes at GYTTE’s “Tree of Life” Training Center. Workshops are also offered on location in the village communities. The six teaching programs are:
• Community Development
• Agricultural Development
• Livestock Development
• Community and Family Health Program – “More Than A Bandage”
• Church and Faith Development
• A. W. A. R. E. Program
The Training Center is located 70 miles southwest of the city of Puebla, on a 40-acre hillside a short distance from the village of Tlancualpican. The Center provides a window into the world of development, showcasing the various services offered by the GYTTE program. An Experimental Farm is maintained to demonstrate and teach sustainable agricultural methods. The purpose of The Livestock Unit is to demonstrate environmentally sound livestock management practices. The Learning Center provides space for classes, courses and workshops.
