General Conference 2019 Special Session

The Council of Bishops called a Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church that was held February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. The purpose was to act on a report from the Council of Bishops based on the recommendations of the Commission on a Way Forward. The 32-member Commission was appointed to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church.

April 29, 2019: PowerPoint from Virginia Conference Delegation and Cabinet (Updated 5/1/19)
In a desire to facilitate good communication and information around the recent Judicial Council decision regarding the 2019 Special Session of General Conference, the Virginia Conference delegation and Cabinet have constructed a PowerPoint presentation to be made available to clergy and laity in the conference. The presentation also has explanatory notes to assist. These resources are designed to work in conjunction with Bishop Pete Weaver's recent letter and the coming bi-district presentations. Martha Stokes, Head Laity delegate, and the Rev. Tom Berlin, Head Clergy delegate, contextualized what the 864 delegates and Council of Bishops did today, Feb. 23, 2019, in the first day of the Special Session of General Conference 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. Today was a day of prayer for about six hours and ended with a time of preparation which included time to understand parliamentary procedure. You can hear from Stokes and Berlin at the conference Facebook page:

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham spoke with Dr. Rob Vaughn, General Conference delegate, about ways churches can prepare before and after General Conference 2019. Markham is the dean and president of Virginia Theological Seminary and is part of the Episcopal Church.
