President's Message by Albert Weal, Jr.
Mission Opportunities
In his remarks at our 2021 Annual Meeting, Gil Hanke said that men need to be more involved in missions. With earthquakes in Haiti and multiple hurricanes affecting the southeastern states, there are and will be many opportunities to be in missions in the coming months.

Please join me tonight, Tuesday, September 7 at 6:30 PM, as we kick off our fall Love, Learn, and Lead webinar series with a conversation on mission opportunities with the Rev. RJ Jun, Associate Director of Serving for the Virginia Conference. Rev. Jun will discuss, share, and engage with us about ways to be in mission. Don’t miss this chance to learn, share, and show Christ’s love to neighbors and communities in need. More details are below.
The Love, Learn, and Lead webinars series launched in 2020 during the pandemic and are a way for men across the Virginia Conference to connect and share with each other. I have received inquiries and interest from other conferences and jurisdictions who are modeling their own webinar series on our Love, Learn, and Lead webinars.
Webinar recordings from past Love, Learn, and Lead webinars are posted on our website https://vaumc.org/UMM.
I look forward to seeing you tonight at 6:30 PM.

Virginia Highly Visible at UM Scouter Training
Next Methodist Scouters Conference is July 2022
The Virginia Conference Scouting Ministry team was well represented at the annual United Methodist Scouter Training at the Philmont Training Center in Cinnamon, New Mexico in July.
The Rev. Brian and Shannon Sixbey of the York River District and Barbara and Gary Duerk of the Roanoke District joined Conference Coordinator Bill Chaffin in New Mexico. The Rev. Pam Anderson of the Richmond District had to be quarantined due to international travel but attended virtually for many events.
Bill Chaffin served on the conference faculty which represented United Methodist Scouters from around the United States.
“This has been the greatest attendance and interaction at this training in the years it has been held,” said Chaffin. “This year was also a celebration of the 100-year relationship between the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America since the 2020 event was cancelled because of the pandemic.”
The Virginia Conference was second only to the North Georgia Conference in number of attendees. The 2022 Methodist Scouters Conference is already scheduled for July 10-16, 2022.
Please join us in Philmont to celebrate Scouting.

"The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again, he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”
