The Rev. Rachel Billups serves as Ginghamsburg’s Executive Pastor of Discipleship and as part of the preaching team. Rachel, an ordained elder within the United Methodist Church, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Bible/Religion and History from Anderson University and a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School. Rachel was also the first clergy resident for the United Methodist West Ohio Conference’s Residency Program. Before joining the Ginghamsburg team in July 2014, Rachel served as the lead pastor of Shiloh United Methodist, a multisite church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Jacob is a native of Nashville, TN. In seminary, Jacob began dreaming of a church where people who feel disconnected from God and the church could find hope, healing, and wholeness in Jesus. In 2008, at the age of 27, Jacob and Rachel moved to Mt Juliet, TN to start Providence Church. Providence has grown into a thriving congregation with 1,600-1,700 in weekly attendance, with  Mission partnerships in East Nashville, Clinton, Oklahoma and Los Cerritos, Nicaragua. Jacob is the author of seven books. Jacob and Rachel have three  daughters, Mary, Lydia, and Phoebe.

Defying Gravity explores what is required to sustain a vibrant life, what we need versus what we want, and what we can do to avoid being pulled into the orbit of materialism. 

The Rev. Tom Berlin serves as the Lead Pastor of Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon, Virginia, a congregation that has pursued intentional generosity that has blessed their local community and global projects in partnership with the Sierra Leone Annual Conference. Tom serves on the Southeastern Jurisdiction Committee on Episcopacy and has been appointed to the United Methodist Church’s Commission on a Way Forward.

What is the 5 Talent Academy?

The 5 Talent Academy is a group of like-minded pastors and laity across the Virginia Conference who are committed to learning the tools and techniques to have healthy, fruitful congregations. As a member of this community, you will learn new ways to increase worship attendance, professions of faith, faith development, ministry to the poor and stewardship.

There is no cost to your church to join the 5 Talent Academy, just a commitment to grow in fruitfulness and multiplication of ministries centering on worship, mission, discipleship, evangelism and stewardship. The 5 Talent Academy can help you achieve your church goals by giving you access to inspiring leaders, proving a venue to brainstorm concepts with peers, and offering you resources to help your church multiply its God-given talents. Consider becoming a member of the Academy today.


1. Worship: 5% annual increase in average worship attendance
2. Evangelism: Professions of faith represent 10% of average worship attendance
3. Faith Development: Small group participation represents 50% of average worship attendance
4. Engage in Mission and Ministry with the Poor:
     a. 50% of worship attendance serves by actively participating in relational ministries
     (e.g., not just donating socks but face-to-face with the poor);
     b. 10% of annual operational giving supports ministry with the poor
5. Stewardship: 5% annual increase in giving
