Churches to enter weekly data on VitalSigns website
Dec. 18, 2012 - Beginning Jan. 1, all Virginia Conference churches are expected to begin entering statistical data each week on the VitalSigns website, http://vitalsigns.gcfa.org. Churches will be using the denomination’s VitalSigns website until the conference “All Things New – Equipping Vital Congregations” work teams have completed development of the new reporting system which is expected to simplify all reporting for local churches. Table I statistics due Jan. 15; Table II, III stats due Jan. 31
Dec. 14, 2012 - The 2012 statistics system is now accessible to local churches to log on and print reports in preparation for year-end reporting. You can access the statistics website at http://www.ezra.gcfa.org. Ezra allows for each church to have two user names: one for the pastor and one for another person. You will need to know your church's 6-digit General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) church number. Pastor’s user name is the six-digit church GCFA number followed by the letter "p" (e.g., 123456p). Password is "methodist" (this is case sensitive). Other user name is the six-digit church GCFA number followed by the letter "o" (e.g., 123456o). Password is "methodist" (this is case sensitive). Statistics for Table I are due Jan. 15. Statistics for Table II and Table III are due Jan. 31. Direct all questions to your district office administrative assistant.

Nov. 29, 2012 - The 2012 Advent issue of the "Neighbors" newsletter is titled "A 300-pound Baby Jesus," written by Martha Stokes, Virginia Conference director of Inclusivity and Lay Leadership Excellence. Martha recounts a very special Nativity presented by Camp Rainbow Connection campers. Heart Havens Closes Home in Goochland County
Sept. 5, 2012 - Heart Havens has closed its Perkins Home in Goochland County. On July 18, the operation of the Perkins Home was transferred to Good Neighbor Homes (GNH), a local for-profit agency providing housing and support to adults with intellectual disabilities. In spite of numerous attempts, the site remained a challenge to adequately staff in a manner consistent with the quality and standards of other Heart Havens programs. More...

Linda Crabbs to be on NBC-TV show about earthquake
Aug. 17, 2012 - The Rev. Linda Crabbs, pastor of Macedonia UMC, will be featured in a TV special about the one-year anniversary of the earthquake that hit central Virginia in 2011. Crabbs and her church helped with disaster relief, and Crabbs served as a Case Manager for Louisa County. The TV show is expected to air on Richmond's NBC-TV affiliate (channel 12) some time on Thursday, Aug. 23.

More Virginians to serve on UMC boards

Marc Brown to serve on UMC's Connectional Table

Hundley to serve on GCFA, insurance, foundation boards
Aug. 17, 2012 - The Rev. Stephen C. Hundley, Roanoke District superintendent, was elected to serve on the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) Board of Directors for another four years. GCFA administers the finances and operational needs of the denomination and serves as the general treasurer of the denomination. Hundley will serve as chairperson of the Fiduciary, Foundation and Property Matters Committee and as a member of the Coordinating Committee of GCFA for the quadrennium. Hundley was also named a director on the eight-member Board of Directors of the United Methodist Insurance Company, Inc., and will be on the Funds Management Committee of the United Methodist Church Foundation. Virginians to serve on UMC boards, commissions
Aug. 17, 2012 - As a result of General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference actions, Marshall Bailey, member of Mount Pisgah UMC, Midlothian, will return to serve a second four-year term on the board of United Methodist Communications; David Brown, member of Galloway UMC, Falls Church, will serve on the Commission on Religion and Race; the Rev. Eduardo Carrillo, associate pastor at Annandale UMC, will serve on the board of Ministries with Young People (a division of the Board of Discipleship); and the Rev. Brenda Biler, Charlottesville District superintendent, will be on the board of Pension and Health Benefits. The Rev. Dr. David McAllister-Wilson, president of Wesley Theological Seminary, was appointed by the Council of Bishops to serve on the University Senate, and the Rev. Virginians to serve on jurisdictional committees
Aug. 17, 2012 - As a result of recent Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference actions, Shirley Cauffman will serve on the jurisdictional Committee on Coordination and Accountability, and the Rev. Mary Beth Blinn will serve on the jurisdictional Council on Finance and Administration. The Rev. Tom Berlin and Shirley Cauffman are the Virginia Conference representatives to the jurisdiction's Committee on the Episcopacy.

Supplies still needed for 'All God's Children' camp
Aug. 9, 2012 - Next week, Aug. 12-17, 95 eager campers will go to Westview on the James for "All God's Children" camp. “All God’s Children Camp” provides a week of fun and sanctuary for children, ages 7 to 12, who have an incarcerated mother or father. Supplies are still needed for each camper to use for the entire week. Campers also get to take these supplies home. Still needed are: 35 sleeping bags (regular size; new or gently used; plain/solid colors only); 5 pillows; 60 twin flat sheets; 22 bath towels; and 67 pool towels. Clergy, laity asked to join 'spiritual renewal' covenant
July 26, 2012 - Spiritual renewal was a topic of much conversation at the 2012 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in Lake Junaluska, NC. Now, as the conference welcomes its new Bishop, Young Jin Cho, the Virginia delegation said it hopes the fruits of that conversation will be far from ordinary. Even before Cho was elected, and anyone knew he would be returning to Virginia as bishop, the delegation drew up a covenant, pledging to devote at least an hour each day to prayer and other spiritual disciplines. Martha Stokes serves with youngest committee officers
April 26, 2012 - Martha Stokes, who was elected secretary of the Church and Society B Legislative Committee at General Conference, said she is excited that, at 51, she is the oldest officer of the committee. “The average age of the six officers is probably 33 to 34,” Stokes said. “They are by far the youngest officers of any committee here, and they all did such a beautiful job today.” She noted that the chair of the sub-committee dealing with abortion-related issues “said she was going to hear what was on everybody’s heart before they even looked at the petitions.” During the discussion there were hugs and tears, but “it was an amazing thing to watch for two hours as people sat around and talked about abortion-related issues in a calm and respectful manner.” Stokes called it an honor to be “the old lady of the group.” “In a church where the average age is 59, we really are modeling a new form of leadership," Stokes said. “This is how the church can be transformed!”

Alexandria high school senior helps fight malaria
April 26, 2012 - Elisabeth Clymer, high school senior from Alexandria who serves as partner for the Imagine No Malaria campaign, participated in the April 25 World Malaria Day observance at General Conference. “We really wanted to raise awareness and show the progress that’s been made,” Clymer said. “In just a few years we have cut malaria deaths in half. Package offers reduced rates on background checks
March 28, 2012 - The Virginia Conference partnered with ScreeningOne to conduct volunteer and staff background checks for the conference and United Methodist churches in Virginia. Through this agreement, the conference established a preferred product package that combines various criminal background searches for an industry-best pre-employment criminal history report. Disaster Response Team to get second shower trailer
March 19, 2012 - The Virginia Conference Disaster Response Team is getting a second “shower trailer” as a sort of gift when the national Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) Conference is held in Norfolk May 7-11. Each year a service project is completed by National VOAD members during their conference. This year the project will be building and outfitting two disaster trailers: a tool trailer that will go to Virginia Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the shower trailer for Virginia United Methodists. Annual Conference offering to support four ministries
Feb. 27, 2012 - Goal for the 2012 Annual Conference Offering is $200,000, to be divided among four different ministries, each receiving $50,000: 1) Brazil Methodist Church - expanding the Shade and Fresh Water Project to other areas in Brazil, Mozambique and other parts of Latin America; 2) Mozambique Conferences of The United Methodist Church - materials and training for theological and biblical education; 3) The United Methodist Church in Cambodia - establishing new churches and growing existing congregations as it works to become an autonomous Methodist Church in 2016; 4) Shalom Farms in the Richmond District - growing food, teaching neighborhood friends how to garden, offering fresh food at pantries and soup kitchens, and teaching young people to manage farm stands. More …

Cathryn Wooton hired as conference graphic designer
Feb. 27, 2012 - Cathryn Wooton has been hired as the new graphic designer/production coordinator in the conference Communications Office, effective March 1. Cathryn has 25 years of graphic design and art direction experience, including owning her own design studio. Her clients have included Christian Youth Theater in Richmond, United Methodist Publishing House, Kodak, Hallmark, Xerox, Aquent, Creating Keepsakes Magazine, Enesco, Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, Figi, Virginia High School League, Godwin High School, Veritas, Premier Pet Products, The Hilb Group, Shady Grove Center for Creative Arts and Discovery United Methodist Church. Prior to that, she worked for Hallmark Cards, Three Dog Bakery and American Century Investments, all in Kansas City. She is a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Glen Allen.

Bishop Pereira tells of amazing church growth in Cuba
Feb. 24, 2012 - Even those in the audience who do not speak Spanish could grasp the meaning of a word Cuba’s Bishop Ricardo Pereira kept using over and over: “corazón” … “heart.” As in you have to have a heart that burns with the desire to do the Lord’s work.
