HERITAGE Scholarly Bulletin

What is HERITAGE?

Published by the Virginia Conference Historical Society since 1973, HERITAGE is the bi-annual scholarly bulletin of Virginia United Methodist history. We focus on the people of United Methodist history, presenting Virginia historical events from the human point of view. Each issue features one or more well-researched articles as well as updates on current endeavors in Virginia Conference historical circles, occasional book reviews, and most important—Rev. Raymond Wrenn’s “Notes from the Ethelbert Drake Society.” Named for the eccentric first editor of The Methodist Christian Sentinel (forerunner to today’s Virginia Advocate), the Society is “dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of items of Virginia Methodist history which heretofore have been overlooked or suppressed.” Click here to view a sample issue (pdf)

Editor of HERITAGE
L. Boyd Lucas has edited HERITAGE since Fall 2009. After earning his B.A. degree in Secondary Education (English and Speech & Drama) at Alderson-Broaddus College, he taught English, speech, and drama at Circleville High School in Pendleton County, West Virginia. There, Boyd met his wife, Rev. Debra Lucas, who pastors St. Peter’s UMC in Montpelier, Hanover County, Virginia. After they moved to Virginia, Boyd represented MetLife for sixteen years. While Debra earned her Master of Divinity degree at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Boyd worked for Cokesbury in Atlanta. Since returning to Virginia, he has worked for Cokesbury in Richmond, Books-A-Million in Roanoke, and now Cokesbury in Richmond. Boyd has always written having published articles, book and music reviews, poetry, and interviews.
