Native American Ministries

Video History

The Rev. Larry Jent has written and produced this video for the conference. This is the story of the work of the Gospel among the Native people of this land. It is an epic tale of honor and shame; grace and gore. After 400 years, the church is just beginning to welcome Native Americans as partners in this work. See why that is so, and how you can help.

Eight Historical Tribes recognized by the State of Virginia

There are more than 50,000 persons of Native American heritage, residing in every county and city of this state;
Christians of every race believe that America and her Native People must engage in mutual ministry for the healing of the land

Native American Ministries Sunday is one of the six churchwide Special Sundays of The United Methodist Church, celebrated on the third Sunday of Easter.  Native American Ministries Sunday nurtures mission with Native Americans and provides scholarships for United Methodist Native American seminarians. Offering funds are divided between the Conference and General Church (1/2 of the collected amount stays with the Conference and 1/2 is sent to the General Church). By mandate of The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church (¶263.6), it is the responsibility of the Conference Committee on Native American Ministries (CONAM) to determine the distribution of the Native American Ministries Sunday offering.
