Day 28: June 1

Scripture: Luke 10: 1-20

Every Sunday when people took time to greet one another, I noticed that one woman made a point to seek out those who were visitors and welcome them to the church. Later I learned that many of the visitors to the church came as a result of her invitation. She was always inviting people to church and her actions didn’t stop there. She nurtured those who came by sending cards, offering friendship, sharing her angel biscuits, and remembering birthdays. Strangely, Hazel Cofer was shocked to learn in a spiritual gifts workshop that the group members saw her as an evangelist.

Hazel believed that every Christian has a personal responsibility to invite others to be part of the community of faith. Her actions debunked the notion that it is the sole responsibility of clergy and church staff to be the only evangelists. She knew what we all know – there are people in our community that need the love, care, and nurture of the church. They just need to be invited.

Prayer: Gracious and loving God, give me the desire and strength to invite someone to come to church with me this coming Sunday. Amen.
