Experiencing the glory of God through ‘Las Posadas’ this Christmas
FELIZ NAVIDAD (Merry Christmas)! I was reflecting on a very beautiful and powerful service offered in our United Methodist Book of Worship for all our congregations. It is the service of “Las Posadas” (“Shelter for the Holy Family”). Las Posadas is a Christian, biblical and evangelistic service out of the Hispanic culture. It is a high drama, leading up to the birth of the Savior, the Christ Child.
Eight homes of church members are chosen in different areas. These homes become house parties, with children present, with a child breaking a piñata as part of the service. Hospitality from the members’ homes includes sharing of hot chocolate, coffee, apple cider, bunuelos (thin, fried pastry), tamales, hot doughnuts and other refreshments.
The piñata represents the devil, who cannot be recognized, and therefore the child is blindfolded. The child is fighting against evil with the rod of virtue, symbolized in the stick provided to break the piñata. When the child perseveres to the end, the glory of God comes down on everyone, as revealed by the sweet treats hidden in the piñata.
The service has Mary on a donkey, great with child. Joseph accompanies her, and they seek to find entrance at a home. There are inside people and outside people. The drama builds and finally the lights come on at a home and the doors of the home are opened wide, and all may enter. The people inside say: “Enter, holy pilgrims. Receive this corner not of this humble home, but of our hearts.”
On the day of the service, people meet at the corner of the home to be visited. In small communities, this happens on foot. In larger communities, car caravans are organized. Traditionally, persons carry lighted candles and sing as they walk. Then they approach each home, hoping that someone will let Mary in and offer shelter.
If you haven’t experienced Las Posadas, I encourage you to try it during Advent in your congregations. Invite some Hispanic-Latino neighbors and friends to join you, or go and join them in their services. It is a wonderful way to actively and spiritually invite Jesus into your heart again. The glory of God is waiting to shine down upon you —
